Luke Humphries, the English professional darts player, who is currently ranked the world’s Number One and a former PDC World Champion, is soon to be crowned the inaugural PDC Winmau World Masters title in Milton Keynes after a breath-taking fight with Jonny Clayton.

This is his seventh major title in only 15 months and is three away from James Martin Wade. The winning title will bring him closer to £2 million in ranking prize money over two seasons.

Humphries’ Road to Victory

Luke Humphries has emerged as the champion of the Winmau World Masters after a remarkable fight with Jonny Clayton, which ended in a thrilling match in Milton Keynes. The superb weekend ended with the English darts player winning the sets in a 6–5.

In a nailbiting game, Humphries reached into Sunday’s finals with a 5–2 lead, but Clayton also fended off an excellent comeback with 3 sets, forcing a decider.

After winning over Joe Collen and Josh Rock in the early two rounds, he ran for the title, defeating Damon Heta in the quarter-finals by 4-1 and recovering from the 2-0 set while seeing off Danny in the semifinals by 5-2.

His consistency and resilience helped him move his way up to the finals and win the seventh major ranking title in 15 months.

The Final Showdown: Humphries vs. Clayton

Humphries made an early 5-2 lead and said, “I started to miss doubles I was trying too hard to close the game out. Jonny was coming back at me, and when he went five-all I thought the game was gone for me.”

After the four high-stakes action-filled days of the game at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes, the final round came down between the world’s number 1, Luke Humphries, and the former champion, Jonny Clayton.

For Humphries, this match was an opportunity for him to put an end to an otherwise frustrating start to the season after he unexpectedly exited from the World’s Darts Championship against Peter Wright.

Meanwhile, Clayton was after his first televised PDC ranking titles right after playing at the 2021 World Grand Prix.

Player Reactions and Impact

The victory has become a huge start to the season as Humphries received ranking money worth over £1 million to defend and extend his tally to almost £1,904,250. The triumph is his seventh career TV ranking title earned since his maiden victory in October 2023.

Humphries admitted, “That double top, I must admit I was shaking, my heart was pounding but it went in so I am really really pleased. It is really nice to be the first name on the rejuvenated Winmau World Masters trophy.”

He also claimed, “That’s a seventh major title for me now, I am three away from the great James Wade, and for me to be even close to someone like that – I can’t even believe it.”

After winning over Joe Cullen and Josh Rock, he defeated Damon Heta in the quarter-finals.

For Clayton, this weekend was a remarkable return to the best form as he made it to the first major final after the World Matchplay in 2023.

Conclusion

The pressure is mounting as Humphries holds his nerve in the final deciding set. So far, the game has reached its final leg, tied at one leg apiece and five sets. Humphries has sealed the winning title with a double 20, although he missed a match dart.

Clayton was defeated in what will be considered one of the most remarkable finals in recent years.

Overall, the victory has brought Humphries his seventh major title with prize money worth £100,000, a two-year order of merit earnings of the £2 million mark.
